Traveling is an exciting and enriching experience, and there are many different types of tourism to explore. From domestic to international, outbound to alternative, there are a variety of ways to experience a destination. Agritourism, experimental travel, experiential trips, self-guided tours, business tourism, recreational drug tourism, and Tolkien tourism are just some of the unique forms of tourism that have emerged in recent years. Domestic tourism is when people travel within their own country.
International tourism is when people travel to another country. Outbound tourism is when people travel from their own country to another. Alternative tourism, also known as specific interest tourism (SIT), involves trips that encourage interaction with local government, individuals and communities. Examples of alternative tourism include ecotourism, adventure tourism, rural tourism, sustainable tourism, and solidarity tourism.
Agritourism is a type of alternative tourism that involves visiting a working farm or agricultural area. There are three main types of agritourism: direct market agrotourism, experience and education agrotourism, and event and recreational agrotourism. Experimental travel is another type of alternative tourism that involves travelers experiencing a country by enthusiastically interacting with its history, people, culture and food. Examples of experimental travel include flying at night, slow round trips, traveling with the alphabet, traveling at twelve, traveling blind, traveling with the other half, and Vacilando.
Self-guided tours or autonomous tours are routes in which the traveler is responsible for getting from point A to point B on their own. These types of tours are created with 3D models and panoramic images in 2D, a sequence of hyperlinked still or video images and models based on images from the real world together with sound and text effects. Popular types of self-guided tours include walking tours, bike tours, and cross-country skiing. Business tourism is when people travel for business purposes such as incentive trips, exhibitions, trade fairs, conferences, meetings and corporate events. Recreational drug tourism is a type of travel for the purpose of using recreational drugs that are not available or illegal in their own country.
Tolkien tourism is when fans of the Lord of the Rings universe travel to film sites, especially in New Zealand. We can also distinguish many types of tourism such as heritage, cultural, urban, rural, ecological and nature tourism. However an increasingly relevant approach to contemporary tourism is to classify tourists according to their level and type of interaction with the destination.
